Problem

Reducing oil heating bill of £2400.00 in a 2700²ft, 10 year old home, with underfloor heating throughout the ground floor and double panel radiators in the upstairs bedrooms.

Solution

Insulation improvement measures prior to retrofitting a renewable energy system, comprising an air source heat pump system which not only provided the home heating, but also the household’s hot water requirements. Daly advised the client to switch electric tariff to Economy 7 to earn maximum cost efficiency. A Daly Retrofit Control System linked the heat pump to the existing oil fired heating system.

Full Story

With ever increasing heating bills, the owners of this 10 year old home in Kells, Co Antrim, approached Daly in April 2012, to explore the possibility of retrofitting a Renewable Energy System to replace their current oil fired central heating system.

Having already researched the benefits of an Air Source Heat Pump and practicality of retrofitting to their existing oil fired central heating system, the client’s were already well down the line in their decision making process.

Daly conducted an extensive site survey and calculated a future running cost simulation for the property at an approximate saving of £500.00 – £600.00 per annum with the retrofit of an air source heat pump system. Daly also advised running the heat pump system mostly at night time on the Economy 7 Electricity tariff of 0.07pence/kw (correct in April 2012).

Further recommendations to achieve the best performance and optimum efficiency from the retrofit of a renewable energy system such as further improving the insulation.

Underfloor heating was already installed on the ground floor, with double panel radiators in the upstairs bedrooms, so suitable heat transmitting conditions were in place for the retrofit of an Air Source Heat Pump.

An added benefit to the homeowners was that the heat pump could provide the household’s hot water heating by simply replacing the existing unvented cylinder with a geothermal cylinder.
The existing system worked primarily through a 3 channel time clock. The Daly Retrofit Control System automatically switches the heat pump back to the oil burner at extreme outside temperatures and will make hot water priority so that the hot water can be re-heated rapidly.

“We linked the heat pump in with the existing oil fired heating system by installing our own control panel – the Daly Retrofit Control System. What this meant for the client was a seamless transition between the old and the new as it works in exactly the same way.”

Daly provided a full service solution to the client, this included the design of a renewable energy solution, specific needs of the client, project management of all aspects of the retrofit from supply to installation, with the Daly team also undertaking the electrical wiring.
